Heatsink Ultralight Tensioner

Heatsink Ultralight Tensioner

Updated lightweight tensioner from Heatsink!

  • Unique 'problem solver' design.
  • Made in the UK.
  • Keep breaking mech hangers? This is for you...
- New and improved, the Heatsink Ultralight Tensioner - made here in the U.K.!
- Simple design means no need for a mech hanger as well as keeping the tensioner itself further out of harms way.
- Aluminium body saves weight over previous steel versions whilst remaining nice and tough.
- Spring now mounts at 45 to the body rather than 90. This improves the clearance over the top half of the chain, meaning you don't need to overtension the spring to make it fit whilst also looking more sleek.
- Slotted mounting point for the spring arrangement allows easy chainline adjustment using a 3mm allen key and an 8mm spanner.
- This new version features a jockey wheel, making the action smoother and quieter, whilst also being even less inclined to 'jump' off the chain than the earlier models.
- Tension is now provided by a single, thicker spring.
- Although it features a range of adjustment, this tensioner is not compatible with all setups. In general, it should only be used with rear sprockets that are 15T and over to ensure enough contact between the chain and rear sprocket, but if you're unsure whether it will work with your bike, feel free to contact us for information.
- A bold Heatsink logo on the carbon fibre effect side panels helps finish the look of the tensioner off nicely.
- Please refer to the Additional Information for setup and warranty information.
- Weight: 56.5g

Additional Information

Please note that we recommend double wheel tensioners for 15T and smaller rear sprockets. This is to ensure a healthy amount of chain wrap and help to eliminate the chance of the chain skipping. It is possible to fit these tensioners with sprockets under 15t, although that will require a setup that has a good amount of chain wrap and a small modification to the tensioner springs.

Bending the tensioner springs is not covered under warranty. The springs only require a gentle curve to maintain suitable tension, therefore deliberately bending the springs to gain more tension (bending the springs can actually lead to a reduction in tension) or over-tensioning the springs will invalidate the warranty.

Jason Nickels

Hello, will this bolt directly to the snail cam bolts in my frame? I'm using a Meastro and the bolts are pretty high up in the drop outs. If not how would this be mounted? J

Hi Jason - This tensioner goes onto your axle, so your snail cam bolts don't factor into the equation too much. Thanks, Mark

Will this fit a 10 mm bolt axle on a hope pro 2 being run on a leeson 609 360 drop out?

is compatible with the onza rip , how can I fix it to the bike ?

Hi Daniel - thanks for your question. Whilst it would be possible to fit this to a Rip, they use horizontal dropouts which are designed for use with chain tugs. Do you have a reason you specifically want or need a sprung tensioner? If not and the chain tugs work with the rest of your setup, we'd advise sticking with them. Hope that helps. Thanks, Flipp.

Hi, would the tensioner work on Inspired Element 2011? BR Martin

How well would this work on a Radix with a 14 tooth cog?

Hi Dave - I haven't seen that setup together before, but from our experience with the Heatsink tensioners in general they don't tend to work on 15t sprockets or under unfortunately. You could possibly try creating a spoke tensioner or something similar - we've found they tend to work pretty well on setups where you need to add a little chain tension without much clearance. Thanks, Mark

Jonathan Bond

I have a 2009 Cannondale Hooligan with the 8 speed Alfine IGH. I have recently added a Bafang BBSHD electric mid-drive, as such I have lost the ability to tension the chain via the eccentric bottom bracket, and I have vertical dropouts. I also have to much stuff around the dropouts to mount an external hanger type tensioner. Will this fit? And if so, how are these attached? Many thanks.

Hi Jonathan - This tensioner sounds like it could do the trick. The tensioner simply fits between your hub and the frame, and sits on your hub's axle. You simply rotate it until it has tensioned your chain as you require, then tighten your wheel up which holds it in place. The only thing to note is that there isn't much wiggle room for adjusting chainline, so ideally you'd need to be able to adjust your chainline using your cassette spacers. If you can do that it should be a safe bet. If not, you may have to adjust the tensioner a little by tweaking the main arm to get it to line up perfectly. Hopefully this helps - if you have any more questions feel free to ask. Thanks, Mark

Hi , will this fit and work with the neon wing 20" frame ? The snail cam lugs do not do the job anymore

Posted by Lewis on 12/06/2018

Reply from TartyBikes on 12/06/2018

Hi Lewis - Unfortunately this won't work as it requires a sprocket size of 15t or above. If you have a local engineering firm, you could ask them to drill the frame to allow a 'normal' snail cam bolt. It's an easy job to do so shouldn't cost much and shouldn't take much time to do. Thanks, Mark

konstantin sepp

Hello, will it fit chris king heavy duty hub and gu 2009 frame?

Posted by konstantin sepp on 17/10/2017

Reply from TartyBikes on 18/10/2017

Hi Konstantin - If it's a King BMX hub, then the tensioner will fit over the axle bolts but we wouldn't recommend using it for anything below 15t. If it's their 135mm/mountain bike hub with the HD axle, the tensioner won't fit over due to the 12mm threaded section on the King axle bolts. Thanks, Mark

Sergey Priven

is it wide enough on the lips to hod a tank chain?

Reply from TartyBikes on 15/10/2013

Hi Sergey - yes, it is easily wide enough to accommodate a Tank chain. Thanks, Flipp.

Viktor Hedin

Hello! Would this tensioner fit my echo pure 2012 24"

Posted by Viktor Hedin on 04/08/2016

Reply from TartyBikes on 05/08/2016

Hi Vitkor - We're not 100% sure unfortunately, although I think it would be a very tight fit. We would usually recommend just using the integrated tensioners that Echo have been using since 2011 as they generally do a very good job. If you've lost the tensioner bolts we stock them separately should you need them. Thanks, Mark
