Hello all,

Here's my Clio 172 Cup track car for sale. You will already know how great these little cars are, but it always amazes me how they can embarass much more expensive and more powerful machinery!

This is the Cup model so has no ABS, no Air Con, no traction control, thinner paint, thinner glass, less sound deadening and tips the scales at 1021kg before weight reduction. I absolutely love this car, and have probably spent more time tinkering with it than driving it (!), but unfortunately it's not getting used as much as I would like due to having other similar cars which will come into their own now the weather is getting better, plus I have the itch to do some racing...

I'd like to point out this is a track-developed car, not just a tatty 172 Cup with the interior pulled out and some harnesses (dangerously) screwed into the floor. The two previous owners were also heavily into motorsport and between us we have created a very reliable and rewarding car. I have done around 6-7 track days with it, covering nearly 1000 miles and all I have done is change the front brake pads and discs once, oil a couple of times (handy having a mate who is sponsored by Fuchs/Silkolene) and PAS sensor (more on that below). Here are some videos on YouTube.

The chap I bought the car off around a year ago was manager of a Ford dealership and had a track spec Mk2 Fiesta, plus an absolutely mint Escort RS Cosworth, and was very particular with everything - he had the corner weighted, but didn't change anything mechanically.

The owner before him was into his Evos but bought this Clio to do some sprints. He spent just short of £5k on the bits listed below but then lost interest (decided he couldn't live without all that power? Haha).

Anyway, moving on... Here's a build thread: Link.

And spec/changed from standard:

- 2003 (03) 172 Cup, shell on approx 102k miles (may have changed slightly from photos).

- All stripped interior, sprayed in tough satin black, apart from carbon door cards and custom made door handles. Electric windows still in, switches re-located to centre console.

- 4" front brake ducts with deflector plates (pics in here: Project Thread), Carbone Lorraine RC5+ front pads (Kam Racing) and Brembo HC discs (both less than 500 miles old, NEVER any fade).

- Completely standard engine on around 72k (more on that later), with K-Tec panel filter (recently cleaned with K&N refresher kit) and carbon cannister removed. Run on Fuchs Titan Pro S 10w-50 (Opie Oils) with very regular changes, got 10L spare I will chuck in if the car sells at asking price.

- Safety Devices 6-Point bolt in cage (towers professionally welded to the shell and re-undersealed afterwards) with padding where required.

- Corbeau Revolution seats, 1 Large, 1 Small (Demon Tweeks) and Schroth FIA Approved harnesses (Demon Tweeks) correctly mounted to harness bar in cage.

- AVO GTX coilovers front and rear (Balance Motorsport - price listed is +VAT), with adjustable platforms and damping. The guy who did most of the modifications worked in the trade, and had these made with an 8 week lead time. Car has been corner weighted for an 80kg driver.

- Rear Anti Roll Bar from a group buy on ClioSport (was about £215). Adjustable (7 positions, but realistically only 3 of them are usable), rose jointed, really tightens everything up nicely.

- Eibach camber bolts up front, running 2.5 degrees and 10 mins toe out. Rear 1 degree camber shims. I have camber and tracking gauges, spent a fair bit of time tinkering to get a good balance.

- OZ F1 15" alloys refurbed satin black, with Kumho Ecsta Sport KU31 tyres (approx 4mm tread remaining) and wireless tyre pressure and temperature system wired into the car.

- Uprated engine mounts.

- Suede Momo wheel (nicest wheel ever!), horn button relocated to dash. Photos show a leather wheel fitted to the car, but I'll put the suede one back in (separate pic near the bottom), unless you'd prefer leather of course.

- Put 6 months tax on in April 2012 and MOT til August IIRC (certainly a good few months - no advisories on last MOT).

Other info:

- When the previous owner bought the car, the engine was in a mess, had been run low on oil. The best way for him to sort this was a complete new engine. A 65k engine was fitted, I have the receipt for this (total £1500 IIRC) which includes cambelt and dephaser pulley. So, the engine mileage is approx 30k behind the shell, if that makes sense.

- Genuine Renault rear discs and bearings fitted around the same time as the new engine and coilovers (less than 10,000 miles ago), almost new Ferodo OE spec pads.

- Engine has that trademark 'kick' at 5500rpm and always starts first time every time on the button, doesn't use any oil even on track.

- Oil and filter changed every few track days, oil still like new.

- The car is pretty loud and rattly thanks to no carpet and/or sound deadening. Front top mounts sometimes clunk a bit when parking on full lock, this hasn't got any worse and from what I understand is fairly normal and an easy for with an M14 (IIRC) washer.

- Always driven with mechanical sympathy, rev matched downshifts, heel and toe etc. Always warmed up correctly (oil temp is behind the water temp!).

- Standard Renault exhaust, fitted new at the same time as engine/cambelt etc. Very small 'blow' from where it joins the manifold, I sealed this with high temp silicone about a year back and it's taken til now to re-appear. Only very minor but wanted to mention it!

- Easily achieves 40mpg on a motorway run, even full of trackday tools and spare wheels!

- Griptape in the footwells, which I will refresh before sale, and on the clutch and brake pedals.

- Plenty of other attention to detail throughout, such as removed seat mounting clips and got self adhesive mounts for all the internal wiring.

- I have a load of interior which I can chuck in at no extra cost if you wish, it's mainly carpets and front trim (door cards, radio, handbrake covery thing, etc).

- Sills a bit bendy from previous owners jacking without care, but structurally fine and rust-free last time I was under there.

- Super beefy home-made camera mount for the cage included.

- Towing eye fitted, I leave it in but can be removed (and included in the sale) if you like.

- Wheels not kerbed but not sparkly clean, wheel bolts a bit rusty.

- PAS pump is a little noisy when cold, seems to be normal from all the Cups I have heard, hasn't got any worse since I've had the car - sounds worse than it is from inside with no carpets/sound deadening!

- Do not be put off by the fact the car has mainly been used on track. My experience with all cars is that if they have been used hard, ANY small issues will show up immediately. For example, I did about 1500 hard road miles (as hard as you can drive on the roads, anyway) with the car before it saw the track. Within 10 mins at Cadwell, the power steering pressure sensor had split, which cost me a smidge over £100 to replace. Luckily there is a Renault dealer less than 10 miles away in Louth!

- There is a miniature catch tank for power steering fluid as it tended to overflow a bit after the above escapade; it has been absolutely fine for a couple of trackdays now so happy to remove it before sale if you wish.

- I have different seats, harnesses and wheels available if someone wanted to do some swaps and try to reduce the price a bit, however I would like the car to go 'as is' if poss, since it all 'works' so well together.

- Could also remove the RARB and sell separately to bring the price down a little if you wanted.

- If it makes the asking price (which I believe it is worth from spending the last month or so looking at what else is around!) I have 10L of Fuchs Titan Pro S oil, spare set of Brembo HC front brake discs (almost new), new aux belt (bought it after it got covered in PAS fluid but haven't got round to changing it as the old one has been just fine) and some clip-on sun visors I will chuck in.

- Sale does not include the Superturismos and RS-R 595 tyres you may have seen in my project thread.

'Bad' bits:

- Bodywork not mint by any means, I bought this car to drive not polish. Looks like some dents have been pulled out of the bonnet where someone has pushed it down rather than dropped it, front OS wing and drivers door have peeling lacquer (hence the black squares - photos below), and there are various small scrapes (taken pics of the ones I could find easily). None of these are bad, but I wanted to mention it, nothing worse than turning up to view a car that's not what you expected!

- Airbag and service (obviously normal) lights on. For 2012, permanently illuminated airbag lights will become an MOT fail. Some of the loom has been stripped away and while it would still be possible to connect up resistors in the correct positions to get the airbag light off, this is not something I would be prepared to do before sale! I had a good long chat with my local garage (AutoSave in Bamber Bridge, do all my MOTs) and they have assured me that they have the 'power' to pass this car with their discretion, given that clearly there are no airbags remaining in the vehicle and the harnesses would prevent any occupants from getting anywhere near the dash/steering wheel.

- Even if you have driven other 172 Cups, you will love this car and just HAVE to buy it! :-)

Insurance:

- Not as bad as you might think! I'm 28, 8 years NCD on another vehicle, but none on this car. Both Brentacre and Adrian Flux allowed me a discount because of the other NCD, and that the car has a Thatcham CAT 1 alarm/immobiliser fitted as standard. I live in PR6 which is a 'D' postcode (insurers rank them A-F where F is the worst), and with all mods declared I paid £650 for the year. Flux's quote was a little cheaper but I went with Brentacre as their service is great and it's awesome to actually speak to someone who's into cars rather than just following a crib sheet in a call centre!

Car is located in Bamber Bridge, which is near Preston, just off J29 of the M6. It'll be indoors in a warehouse so plenty of room to view even if dark and/or rainy, happy to let you have a look underneath on ramps, etc. Please bring proof of insurance if you wish to drive it (or hand me cash as my own insurance before you do!), but more than happy to take you out for a spin.

Price: £3995 with all the extras, plus I'm more than happy to spend a bit of time going over how to adjust the geo, or tweaking it to your tastes. For example, you'll want a bit less than 2.5 camber on the front if you plan to do mostly road stuff, over ~1.5 eats tyres on a daily, and if you want the front a bit less 'pointy' I'll tweak the tracking back to standard (0 toe in or out).

Or: I am looking for a race-prepped Mk1 MX-5 eligible for Max5 or Ma5da series. If you fancy a swap let me know and we can chat, cash your way if the right car.

Lots of pictures...
